Patrick McCroskey Awarded AV® Preeminent™ Rating by Martindale-Hubbell

In early March 2010, Patrick McCroskey received Martindale-Hubbell's "AV® Preeminent® 5.0 out of 5 Peer Review Rated", the highest peer reviewing rating in Martin dale-Hubbell's coffers.

The Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings help buyers of legal services identify, evaluate and select the most appropriate lawyer for a specific task at hand. Lawyer Ratings serve as an objective indicator that a lawyer has the highest ethical standards and professional ability and are used by buyers of legal services to justify their hiring decisions.

General Ethical Standards Rating
The General Ethical Standards rating denotes adherence to professional standards of conduct and ethics, reliability, diligence and other criteria relevant to the discharge of professional responsibilities.

Those lawyers who meet the "Very High" criteria of General Ethical Standards can proceed to the next step in the ratings process.

Legal Ability Ratings
For lawyers rated with the changed methodology, Legal Ability ratings will now indicate professional ability within a specific area of practice. Legal Ability ratings are based on performance in five key areas, rated on a scale of 1 to 5 (with 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest). These areas are:

  • Legal Knowledge - Lawyer's familiarity with the laws governing his/her specific area of practice(s)
  • Analytical Capabilities - Lawyer's creativity in analyzing legal issues and applying technical knowledge
  • Judgment - Lawyer's demonstration of the salient factors that drive the outcome of a given case or issue.
  • Communication Ability - Lawyer's capability to communicate persuasively and credibly
  • Legal Experience - Lawyer's degree of experience in his/her specific area of practice(s)

The Gum, Hillier & McCroskey firm and Howard Gum have long held the coveted AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell. The honor bestowed upon Patrick is for personal accomplishments and recognition by other AV rated lawyers in North Carolina.

Howard Gum has been listed in Super Lawyers since it first came to North Carolina in 2006. David Hillier is listed in Super Lawyers™ Star Search in 2010, and Patrick McCroskey has again been listed to Super Lawyers™ Rising Stars, having first appeared on that list in 2009.

What is a Super Lawyer™? Super Lawyers™ are the top 5 percent of attorneys in each state, as chosen by their peers and through the independent research of Law & Politics Magazine.  In selecting attorneys for Super Lawyers™, Law & Politics employs a rigorous, multiphase process. Peer nominations and evaluations are combined with third party research. Each candidate is evaluated on 12 indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement. Selections are made on an annual, state-by-state basis. Super Lawyers™ inducts only 5% of the attorneys in any given state.

Super Lawyers™ Rising Stars names the state's top up-and-coming attorneys, typically under age 40 and who have been practicing law for 10 years or less. Super Lawyers™ Magazine is published in all 50 states and reaches more than 13 million readers.

Patrick McCroskey Granted Fellowship into the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers

Early in 2009, Patrick McCroskey was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML)

To be named a Fellow, a lawyer must be recognized by the bench and bar in his or her jurisdiction as an expert practitioner in matrimonial law.  Fellows must be admitted to practice law for 10 years, primarily engage in domestic relations work and have completed 15 hours of continuing legal education in each of previous five years. Fellows are required to pass oral and/or written examination on wide-ranging issues pertaining to matrimonial and family law, be interviewed by a state board of examiners as well as be passed upon by other matrimonial law practitioners in the state.  Fellows must aspire to the ethical standards set forth in the "Bounds of Advocacy" as well as state bar rules of professional conduct and must have demonstrated involvement in study or improvement of matrimonial law, such as publishing articles or continuing education presentations.

AAML Fellows across the United States are generally recognized by judges and attorneys as preeminent family law practitioners with a high level of knowledge, skill and integrity.   There are less than 1,700 lawyers in the United States that have been granted this prestigious fellowship.  Patrick's induction to the AAML is further evidence of Gum, Hillier & McCroskey’s commitment to professional excellence in North Carolina.
